For Immediate Release:
WAKEFIELD WINEMAKER ADAM EGGINS AWARDED
AUSTRALIAN WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR
Adam Eggins, chief winemaker at Clare Valley winery, Wakefield in South Australia, has been awarded the Winestate Magazine Australian Winemaker of the Year for 2006.
Announced yesterday at the Winestate Magazine Wine of the Year Awards held in Adelaide, in South Australia, Adam was one of five leading winemakers up for the prestigious accolade.
Wakefield wines have enjoyed enormous success during 2006 particularly on the international show circuit, with their premium, single vineyard St Andrews label becoming the star performer not least with the current release 2001 St Andrews Riesling taking home Best New World Riesling at the International Riesling Competition in Germany, and the 2001 St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon last year famously took home trophies for Best Cabernet Sauvignon and Best Single Estate Wine at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London.
Adam, working alongside Mitchell Taylor, Managing Director and consultant winemaker, has been chief winemaker for the family winery since 2000 and has had an enormous impact on where Wakefields’ wines sit today widely regarded as producing some of the best value and highest quality wines in Australia.
A thrilled Adam Eggins commented:
“I’m absolutely delighted to have been awarded this title which is wonderful recognition not just for myself, but for the talented team and resources I have at my disposable. I am fortunate enough to work with a family who understand passionately the importance of investment in the right fruit, advanced machinery, and also of having the best people on your team.”
Adam’s approach to winemaking is one of constant evolution, incorporating new world innovation with traditional old world, estate techniques. “The Taylor family has given me the opportunity to experiment. What we try to do with St Andrews is a bit different, a bit indulgent. We try different methods and that has repercussions. We tried whole bunch pressing of our riesling and chardonnay grapes for the 2005 vintage and got outstanding results which everyone will see when they are released in four year’s time,” he said.
While the St Andrews flagship range sits at the top of the family tree, around 90 percent of the family’s wine is sold in the ultra-competitive $12 -$20 segments of the local and international markets. For a family owned business like Wakefield to successfully compete with the corporate conglomerates is a striking achievement for winemaking ingenuity and resourcefulness.
Eggins’ commitment to applying the same fastidious, passionate approach to winemaking across all the Wakefield ranges from Promised Land to St Andrews, results in wines of exceptional value and quality. The majority of the wines within the $13 RRP Promised Land range and $17 RRP Wakefield Estate range occupy Top 5 sales positions in their respective categories.
The winemaker of the year award is the result of Wakefield wines consistently achieving top scoring reviews throughout the course of the year, as judged by Winestate’s panel. More than 11,000 wines were tasted by the panel and the awards, which are now in their 10th year, also recognise top wines produced across 11categories, in both Australia and New Zealand.
